Fusion food is not one of my preferred genre of food, so when I saw that this place offered Peranakan fusion food, I was slightly put off.
But since it seems like they still had slightly tweaked traditional dishes, I decided to give it a shot.

The decoration was quite homely, the utensils were placed in the classic blue rimmed 祝君早安 kind of mug and the tables has the Peranakan tiles style. I liked the wall the most, the left side was more of the Chinese stuff like 古惑仔, A Chinese Odyssey and In The Mood For Love. The right side has the more western stuff. The TV was also showing football which is a big big bonus.
There was only 2 of us so we didn’t get to order much. We’ve only got 3 dishes to share for now and this post might be updated if the next visit is within 2 months.
Slow Braised Pork Belly
$15.90

First off, the taste. Unlike the typical Lor Bak, this doesn’t have a soy and dark sauce taste to it. The ginger and five spice is a little stronger with the sauce reduced to a thick stewy liquid. Pork belly portions are generous and unlike some places where I would separate the meat from the fat, I could easily pop each piece into my mouth and didn’t feel disgusted from consuming fat.
This goes well with…
Hurry! Hurry! Chicken Curry
$12.90

This combo comes with the black you tiao (or what I usually call yau za guai). Why is the you tiao black? According to the owners, it is a homage to their previous restaurant where they used to charcoal grill the seafood.
Curry and black sauce, what a good match.

The you tiao actually doesn’t taste any different from other you tiao. So those who think that the colour will affect the taste, don’t worry, it doesn’t.

The curry chicken is quite worth it, considering the size that was given. The chicken was soft and the curry was sweet, not too spicy and most importantly, not too salty.
They made the rempah themselves (expected from Peranakans) hence the taste didn’t have the typical, mildly spicy, salty taste like the ones you find at most other places.
Dip the you tiao into the curry and it is almost like dipping bread. Not the combo we grew up with but it makes sense.
Pulut Hitam
$5.90

Warm and glazed with coconut milk, the thick and gooey texture goes to show they didn’t scrimp on the ingredients. The longans are a nice touch to the dish that gives another dimension to the texture.

Too bad there were just 2 of us, otherwise we could have ordered more food.
After looking at the menu, I feel that the fusion aspect was not overdone like some other fusion restaurants. I think it tries to marry the traditional taste with recognisable ingredients that we in Singapore have grown up with (e.g. using mee pok for carbonara instead of spaghetti or using spaghetti instead of laksa noodles for Assam Laksa) so the taste is still familiar.
Ultimately, this place is recommended, especially with a group of friends. Eat, drink and be merry.
