Ahh the American Express Platinum card. Where do I start?
Well, it so happens that one of my good friend carries this card and he mentioned about some super good discounts at quite a number of restaurants. He tells me from time to time, this or that place has a 1 for 1 free drink, blah blah blah. I didn’t really pay attention to it because when I checked the annual fee online, it’s $321! I could get many drinks for that kind of money ! (At a cheaper place of course).
One day, while we were chilling out, we decided to check out this newly opened place called Capitol (This was quite some time back). The entrance fee was $50 bucks! That money could have bought a lot of diapers for my newborn baby! “Don’t worry bro, I got Amex Plat, can bring us in for free”.
Wah, this is really not bad, saved $100 bucks. Perception on the card shifted a bit.
Then we had another celebration at Lawry’s steak house. We got a 35% off (For 3 diners) off the total bill. “Well, really not bad” but the annual fee still had me hesitating. So I went to read up on what this card has to offer and I must say, the offerings are pretty decent, especially for dining and drinks.
How I Got This Card
The final push came when I called Amex to waive off some late charges for my credit card bill as I was travelling. I was already holding onto the Amex Krisflyer Ascend card.
To my pleasant surprise – only and I mean ONLY for that period, they were offering a PERPETUAL Annual Fee Waiver for clients who were holding onto the Krisflyer Ascend card!
That’s it! Gimme that card!! There are currently 2 promotions that are running under the American Express Platinum Program as listed on their website. One is Loving Dining (Food) and the other is Chillax (Drinks).

Conclusion: Is the American Express Platinum annual fee worth the money? I would say yes, if you are a food lover or if you’re a person who have many occasions to celebrate.
The savings can quickly add up significantly that more than pays for the card. On the flip side, Amex dining choices are quite limited and do hope to see them working to expand the list.
That would make a more compelling offer. But since, I got the American Express Platinum Card for free, well, there’s nothing I would complain about.
